Azaleas at Koto no Naishiai

Among the 70 varieties of azalea, the famous "Koto no Naishii Ai Azalea" stands over 5m tall and is estimated to be 800 years old. It is said that the azalea was planted in 1334 by Gunma's military commander Nitta Yoshisada (1301-1338) for his beloved wife Koto no Naishi, and was then transplanted to this area by the third lord of Tatebayashi Castle, Sakakibara (Matsudaira) Tadatsugu.
